The Chicamocha canyon is a geographical accident in Colombia located on the brook of the Chicamocha river, during his tour of the departments of Boyacá and mainly of Santander, where reaches its maximum depth in the vicinity of Bucaramanga city, between the municipalities of Aratoca, Cepitá, Santos and Jordan.
The canyon of the Chicamocha, is the result of the erosion on the river bed, with the formation of large gorges on both banks. The canyon starts in the vicinity of the village of Soatá in Boyaca department and meets most of its course in the department of Santander ending close to the municipality of Lebrija. These mountainous plates are the result of the tectonic movements of the earth, where they move and stem geological faults that comprise the territory of the Chicamocha river, to regions such as the Mesa de los Santos and the same city of Bucaramanga but in their great majority extends over the municipality of Aratoca. With over 108,000 hectares, the Chicamocha river is one of the largest in the world, and was formed 46 million years ago in a place that before was an immense lake that allowed the formation of caverns and hosted marine animals that still remains.
In one of its hillsides of the cannon, in the route from San Gil to Bucaramanga, the National park of the Chicamocha works from December, 2006.
